Standards Based Grading and the Biology EOC
Standards Reference Grading Expectations
1. Identify essential (guaranteed & viable) curriculum in each course in which grade level proficiency is required to earn a passing grade in the course.
2. Establish grade level formative assessments for all essential curriculum.
3. Assure essential curriculum standards, benchmarks, etc. are not averaged for grading purposes.
4. Assure extra time and support for student mastery of the essential curriculum.
5. Establish directive rather than invitational interventions.
6. Assure the essential curriculum and the formative assessments and the directive response plan are systematic by the team as a whole rather than at the discretion of the individual teacher.
7. Establish guidelines for how long and how many interventions (multiple student opportunities to demonstrate learning) will be allowed before summative documentation of course failure.
8. Establish an administrative and guidance support plan.
9. Establish a communication plan for parents and students regarding therequired components and support structures of the proficiency model.
Beginning the 2012-13 school year, Biology 1 students MUST pass the state required End-Of-Course Exam (EOC). If students do not meet proficiency on assessments, they are given work that reteaches the material, then they must redo and resubmit the work to show they have learned the material. We have worked for several years to develop common assessments that test each of the standards the state has outlined for us. These assessments give our students the best chance to meet proficincy of each standard and thus better prepare them for the EOC!
We give our students plenty of practice with what are called Formatives i.e. notes, worksheets, labs, etc. We like to refer to our formatives as 'practice'. Once the students have practiced, they are ready for a 'scrimmage' when they take a MiniSummative (quiz). The MiniSummatives are based on FOUNDATION vocabulary and are smaller versions of the tests (see below). After the students scrimmage, they are then ready for the 'big game', in the form of a MAJORSummative (test), which inlcudes foundation vocabulary, but more importantly, APPLICATION of the vocabulary.
